UTILITY PROFILES & RATE COMPARISONS
Wastewater
The treatment plant in South Bend has capacity to provide tertiary treatment
of 48 million gallons per day (mgd) of wastewater. The city's unused capacity
is about 17 percent of its total capacity. Continuous process improvements
and planned capacity-increase to 62.5 mgd are scheduled over the next
ten years. The plant provides service to the city, including its industrial
parks and the county’s heavy industrial area to the west of the
city in the New Carlisle area. A trunk sewer line connects the area to
the South Bend treatment plant. The line is currently operating at only
10 to 50 percent of available capacity. The city of Mishawaka also provides
tertiary treatment of wastewater for residential, commercial and industrial
customers. The system currently treats an average of 12 mgd and has capacity
available for future industrial development.
The following table lists information regarding monthly wastewater rates
for typical residential, commercial/light industrial and industrial users
in South Bend and other Midwestern communities. The table shows that wastewater
rates in South Bend are very competitive when weighed against comparable
cities and larger metropolitan areas in the Midwest.
