Transportation - Heavy-Duty Highway

INDIANA EXTRA HEAVY-DUTY HIGHWAY

Indiana has long understood that it must often modify how the state’s infrastructure is operated if its industries are to remain competitive. Toward this end, the state has created transportation infrastructure and adopted regulatory procedures designed to meet the needs of businesses with extra heavy, wide, high or long loads.

St. Joseph County, Indiana is situated at the eastern end of Indiana’s Extra Heavy-Duty Highway. This highway was initially designed to allow steel manufacturers located along the southern end of Lake Michigan to ship double coils of steel into the Michigan auto markets (134,000 lbs. vs. 80,000 lbs. gross vehicle weight). In the late 1980s, the route was extended into St Joseph County, Indiana to accommodate the needs of steel processors and other expanding local industries.
