Transportation - Rail Services

RAIL SERVICES

If rail is a requirement, it can be satisfied in St. Joseph County, Indiana. Three Class I and one Class II railroads provide consistently reliable service for our local industries. With service to and from points throughout the United States and Canada, these rail lines allow shippers and receivers multiple supply chain management options.

Canadian National provides broad coast-to-coast coverage throughout Canada and from the Midwest to the Gulf Coast. CN track generally runs from the far western portion of the county, through downtown South Bend, and then heads in a northeasterly direction through Granger and beyond to Detroit, Toronto, Montreal and Halifax. The link between St. Joseph County, Indiana and Chicago allows local shippers single line service to western Canada and as far south as New Orleans.

CSX Transportation has double track rail lines running through the southwest corner of St. Joseph County, Indiana. This major midwest route provides a link between Chicago and hundreds of points in the eastern half of the United States and Montreal, Canada. The carrier serves both of Walkerton’s industrial areas.

Norfolk Southern has 22,000 miles of track serving 19 states in the eastern half of the country, generally east of the Mississippi River. Of the total, 70 miles of NS track traverse St. Joseph County, Indiana, including its primary route linking New York and Chicago. The carrier serves 115 local industries located in Osceola, Mishawaka, South Bend, New Carlisle and unincorporated parts of the county.

The Chicago SouthShore & South Bend Railroad (“SouthShore”) is a Class II railroad system running through St. Joseph County, Indiana. It is a strategically located shortline rail carrier connecting northern Indiana’s industrial complex to 18 transcontinental, regional and local railroads, including all those within the Chicago Switching District. The SouthShore Railroad serves western St. Joseph County, Indiana from New Carlisle to the industrial park complexes near the South Bend Regional Airport. The SouthShore provides an ideal rail alternative to businesses having lower volumes of rail freight.

For commuting purposes, the South Shore Line (NICTD) conveniently links St. Joseph County, Indiana with downtown Chicago. The line offers five daily departures Monday through Friday and eight daily departures on weekends, with all trains departing from the South Bend Regional Airport.

In addition, the South Bend/Mishawaka area has a number of shortline carriers that provide services over previously vacated rail facilities.
