PORTS

Businesses in need of waterborne services have options in St. Joseph County, Indiana not available in many locations around the country, namely convenient access to both the Mississippi River and the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway. Located just 60 and 84 miles west of South Bend, the Port of Indiana – Burns Harbor/Portage and the Port of Chicago are just two of the reasons why the St. Joseph County, Indiana area is often amongst the leading export regions in the United States.

The Port of Indiana – Burns Harbor/Portage offers year-round barge access to midwestern markets and the Gulf of Mexico through the Inland Waterway System. This system connects the port to the Illinois, Ohio and Mississippi Rivers via canals and channels. International markets can also be accessed from the Great Lakes via the St. Lawrence Seaway. The port has direct access to both Norfolk Southern and Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad lines, and has immediate access to I-80/I-90 and to nearby I-94.

The Port of Chicago provides access for deep-draft commercial vessels to reach the Atlantic Ocean via the St. Lawrence Seaway and allows barge traffic to reach the Gulf of Mexico through the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers. The port is served by both Norfolk Southern and Chicago SouthShore and South Bend Railroads, and has immediate access to I-90 and I-94.
